Topeng
Topeng is the historical ‘mask play and deals with the old kings, princes and ministers of Majapahit and gelgel. It is above all a ritual dance drama ;
ancestral worship that takes place in its purest form when performed silently by a single dancer dancing one Type or character after the other ( topeng pajegan). A complete set of masks (Tapel) includes ona or more kings, that is, refined smiling masks in white or yellow, a few “strong’ princes and ministers with darker skin colouring and round eyes, some wise old ancestors and advisers (tua) and. as masks with individual featuress. The half-masks of the penasar as well as profusion of eccentric common people, who, as opposed to the kings, ministers and old men, have speaking roles. Before the play, the masks are animated with special mantras.

Tapel Dalem – ( kingly type from the topeng mask play )
Used as the mask for King Arsawijaya of Majapahit,
in particular in the topeng of Saba Gianyar.
Mask made of pufe wood (Alstonia scholaris),eyebrows and moustache made
of black goatskin. Nautilus shell teeth.
Jewellery on forehead and in hair :
plaster relief with gold leaf.
Skin colouring orangish- yellow using the mineral dye pere.
Rims of the eyes, nostrils and mouth red.
Jayasunu - mask from the topeng chronicle play Face mask ( tapel) of saint jaya sunu ( otherwhise known as sidakarya), which is extremely important in the topeng pajegan. made from wood pule tree,skin colouring white,nostrils and lips are red,eyebrow,moustache and beard made of goatskin.
