Batubulan village
Batubulan is a village belongs to Sukawati district, Gianyar regency. It has a strategic location for being the western gate of Gianyar regency and as a terminal that links Denpasar city and the Eastern part of Bali island.Batubulan was, firstly,known as an agricultural village rich with arts including dancing and carving. The structure of the cultural and agricultural community inspired by Hindu religion has been the’ basic life of Batubulan community.
The image of Batubulan as an art village has made it stronger by the establishment of a secondary art school which includes Indonesian arts and musics as subjects secondary drawing and painting art school and secondary Handicraft Industry school. Being open to tourism development supported by its art and its strategic location has developed the village to be a tourist village. It is very well known nationally and internationally with its daily Barong dances performance.
Location
It is aproximately 10 Km in distance from Denpasar city 21
Km from Gianyar the capital town. It can be reached by motorbikes or cars.
Visit
Everyday one can see tourists enjoying Barong dance at five different stages. Instead of that/ one can find people at work along the road carving stone for house/ hotel and temple decoration. The statues carved are usually figurating the Gods, Heroes or Demons taken from Ramayana and Mahabrata epics.
Description
Based on one of the chronicles found, there happened a rebellion conducted by I Gusti Agung Maruti in 17th century in Gelgel Kingdom of Klungkung regency. In the middle of the rebel a horse rider found a child who then was grown up by I Gusti Ngurah Bija from Penatih village and I Gusti Ngurah Jambe Pulefrom Badung Kingdom. King of Badung at that time wanted the child to be put in a basket. The child later named Dewa Agung Kalasan.Actually, the child was the descendant of Dalem
Sagening. After me child grown up, he was ordered by the King of Badung to build a palace at the eastern part of Badung Kingdom. At the time of the jungle clearance, he then saw a stone sparkling like moon, so this place was then called “Batubulan“. Dewa Agung Kalasan then lived permanently at the place with his followers and expanded his authority up to Batuyang and Batu Aji villages nearby. The “moonstone” is now kept at the royal family temple of Batubulan Palace.
