Delod Brawah Beach

Submitted by on Thursday, 7 August 2008No Comment

Delod Berawah beach known as sloping beach with black sand is an ideal place for recreation, swimming and other activities. Once, there is a belief that its black sand can heal a kind of rheumatism, however it is need to be proven. The main attraction of this beach is at sunset time when a row of the fishermen traditional “Jukung” catching fish become glowing red under the twilight.
Instead of that, there is an extensive field nearby where “mekepung” (traditional buffalo race) is often held/ a special attraction can not be found elsewhere.

Location
The beach can easily be reached since it belongs to a village name Delod Berawah, district Mendoyo, Jembrana regency, about 88 km in distance from Denpasar through excellent asphalted road. At a village named Tegalcangkring at a junction road, it is about 1,5 km going to the South to get to Delod Berawah beach through extensive ricefield often visited by flock of herons storks.

Facility
Some facilities like simple accommodation and food stalls are available while public toilet, restaurant and souvenir-kiosk are expected to be built in short time regarding that extensive site are still available at the location.

Tourist Visit
Its sloping beach attracts abundant visitors (mostly domestic) during holiday season, however some foreign visitors (mainly surfers) also often seen visiting the beach later this time.

Description
The black colour of Delod Berawah sand beach comes through natural process since at the beginning the area and its neighbourhood was once a swamp (in Balinese called Berawah) so the people living at the village on the North then called the newly formed village as Delod Berawah (“Delod” means South, in Balinese). This beach like the estuary of Perancak river nearby used to be occupied by crocodiles, but there is no more crocodiles left nowadays because people hunted and killed them all.
One thing still left is a crocodile statue, just to recollect the people of Delod Berawah’s memory of the past. On the North of Delod Berawah beach is a field where “Mekepung” (traditional water-buffalo race) regularly held. The field is considered the best in Jembrana since it can also be used during rainy season.
“Mekepung” is a special traditional attraction when two buffaloes driven carts with their respective jockey involve themselves in a race. This kind of attraction can only be found in Jembrana regency.
