Description
Iseh village as a place of interest had been known before the war for independence in Indonesia (1945). A German painter named : Walter Spies lived at Iseh between 1895-1942. He built a small hut as his painting studio and here at Iseh he produced some of his best paintings.
Instead of being a painter, Mr. Spies was also interested iri “gamelan” orchestras. His intercourse with the locals mainly the artists was so close thai he became the founder of two gamelan – groups called “sekeha” In January 1942, several days before the Japanese troop’ attacked Java, Walter Spies and the other German citizens were evacuated to India.
Unfortunately the ship carrying them was attacked by the Japanese bomber aircraft till drowned. Walter Spies and his fellows were also’ drowned and Ball lost one of its best friends.
Another foreign – painter who also ever lived at Iseh is Theo Meier a Swiss Citizen who was born at Bole, Switzerland in March 31, 1908. While living at Iseh, Theo Meier painted a lot about the beautiful countryside of Iseh with Mt. Agung as the back ground. His painting objects were also the locals daily activities, dancers and rituals, so both of those painters are considered to be meritorious in promoting the beauty of Iseh.
