Description
Padang Bai is a natural bay safely sheltered by cluster of
hills and has since long been functioned as sea port.
During the time of the Dutch colonization and influenced by the
using of the language, the name Teluk Padang gradually became
Padang Bai (Padang Bay).On the hill of the eastern part of Padang Bai beach there are two temples known as Dang Kahyangan temple (with the entire Balinese as its adherents). One on the North is called Silayukti Temple built by Mpu Kuturan (one of Hindu holymen coming from Java) around XI century during His holy visit to Ball. Mpu Kuturan is a highpriest who has great favour in Hindu teaching in Ball. His teaching is still obeyed and applied up to this present time by the Hindu Balinese and the temple’s anniversary ceremony according to Balinese calendar is always celebrated by its followers coming from all over the island, with rituals and prayers. On the Southern part of Silayukti Temple is Tanjung Sari Temple built by Mpu Baradah, the youngest brother of Mpu Kuturan On the western part of Padang Bai harbour there is also another temple called Penataran Agung Temple built by another Hindu Holyman from Java named Danghyang Nirartha or Danghyang Dwijendra around XVI century. Danghyang Nirartha or often called “Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rawuh” ( The just arriyed Mighty Highpriest ) is one of Mpu
Kuturan descendants. So, instead of going to Padang Bai just for fun or recreation, people especially Balinese or Hindu followers will also come for religious purpose to those temples.
