About Yoga
Yoga Styles
Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is the name given to the system of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures–a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. For more information on Ashtanga, see www.ashtanga.com
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga focuses on the in-depth study of Asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control). In Iyengar, Asanas are held for considerable lengths of time in order to let the effects of the poses penetrate deeper within the individual. In addition, Iyengar allows for the use of different props, such as wooden blocks, chairs, blankets and belts that are used to help one adjust or support oneself in the different postures. The beauty of Iyengar is its emphasis on correct anatomical strength, and sensitivity in mind, body and spirit. For more information on Iyengar, see www.iyengar-yoga.com
Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini is the Yoga of self-realization. Kundalini Yoga is a potent and effective system of self-transformation and personal development. This type of yoga stimulates individual growth through systematic techniques that strengthen the nervous system and balance the glandular system (the guardians of health) for increased stability and vitality. Meditation improves mental concentration, sharpens awareness and gives the direct experience of consciousness. Kundalini Yoga encompasses and draws from all yogic systems and techniques. For more information on Kundalini Yoga, see www.yogibhajan.com and www.sahajyoga.org
Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is one of the ancient disciplines used to attain divine consciousness and self-realization. HA(sun) THA (moon) symbolizes the principle of divine polarity. First laid down by sage YAGNAVALKYA, the spiritual advisor of king Janak of Mithila, Hatha yoga intends to guide humankind on the path towards self-realization and to live in harmony with the universe. Whether you have never taken a yoga class before, or if you have been pursing yoga for years, this technique is for you. Hatha Yoga Postures are combined with simple breathing techniques to strengthen and tone the body while increasing flexibility. These classes are also great for beginners, runners, soccer players, mountain climbers or any other type of athlete who wants to gain more flexability and tone their body. This ancient Mother of all the exercises offers a wonderful possibility for good health, long life and contentment. For more information on Hatha Yoga, see:
